For those of you from NC, you might be familiar with the Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk every October. Stephen & I attended one year--it's a very fun little event. For those who aren't familiar, it's a festival designed around these cute fuzzy caterpillars that are used to predict how cold winter will be. This article explains it pretty well!
While doing some yardwork yesterday, we were surprised to discover that woolly worms live this far north! Unfortunately, we didn't check the colours of their segments to predict our winter. I saw another one when harvesting my parsley today, but as you can see from the picture, his predictive value was pretty low. Poor woolly worm!
